Hidden Structures – 100 Years of X-ray Crystallography

This display celebrates the centenary of X-ray crystallography, a technique developed by father-and-son team William H. Bragg and W. Lawrence Bragg in 1913.

X-ray crystallography was central to molecular biology, the science of proteins, viruses and other bio-molecules that developed in the years after World War II. Hidden Structures explores the stories behind some of the most striking molecular models from this golden age of X-ray crystallography, including DNA, insulin and haemoglobin.

Opening in time for International Women’s Day, Hidden Structures also discusses the complex role of women in molecular biology and displays key models by Kathleen Lonsdale and Dorothy Hodgkin.

The 12th International Conference on Quasicrystalslogo584

ICQ12 provides an excellent opportunity to learn about new results in the field of quasicrystals and related topics. The ICQ12 follows the Nobel Prize given to Dan Shechtman in 2011 for the discovery of quasicrystals. Professor Shechtman will be an honourable guest of the Conference. ICQ12 also offers an opportunity for researchers working on quasicrystals and related topics to exchange ideas and encourage collaborations with other research groups, hence promoting material science and engineering. The campus of AGH University is located at the centre of Kraków, which is the most famous academic (several universities) and touristic place (former capital) in Poland.

The 11th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation (BSR)

8th – 11th September 2013

The 11th International Conference on Biology and Synchrotron Radiation (BSR) will take place in the Hotel Grand Elysee in Hamburg, Germany on 8th – 11th September 2013. The venue, situated in the centre of the north German city, offers ample space for scientific, commercial and poster sessions, as well as room for networking and making new contacts. An additional highlight is the opportunity to visit the synchrotron facilities at the PETRA III synchrotron ring on the DESY campus in the west of the city.

The International BSR meetings are held every three years since 1986 and bring the scientists involved in methodical development on synchrotron and laser sources together with a broad community of biologists having an ambition to make the best use of the most advanced infrastructures in structural biology. The scientific scope of BSR2013, apart from encompassing technical aspects, will be largely oriented towards tackling new biological challenges at atomic, molecular and cellular level. Topics include biological small angle X-ray scattering, macromolecular X-ray crystallography, biological X-ray imaging and spectroscopy, biological sample preparation, free electron laser applications, synchrotron instrumentation, industrial applications, hybrid methods and ultimate storage rings.

Meeting of the Italian, Spanish and Swiss Crystallographic AssociationsBanner_MISSCA2013

Three years after their second successful Meeting (MISCA 2010, Oviedo, Spain), and six years after they organized their first joint Conference in Italy (MISCA 2007, Copannello di Stalettì, Italy), the Italian and Spanish Crystallography Associations deemed it necessary to renew this traditional event.

Stimulated also by the interest shown by the Swiss Crystallography Society, the three National Associations have merged their efforts to organize, in the beautiful surroundings of Villa Olmo, on the shore of the Lake of Como, the first Meeting of the Italian, Spanish and Swiss Crystallography Associations – MISSCA 2013.

In our intentions, the Conference will contribute to broaden the scientific contacts among the Members of the three communities. Moreover, thanks to the choice of an easily accessible location near Central Europe, it may attract scientists from neighboring Countries and fields.

Nearly one century has passed since Nobel Prizes were awarded for the discovery of diffraction by crystals and for closely related scientific activities. Later on, in 1927, Villa Olmo hosted the first Volta Conference, in which the uncertainty principle by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg was originally disclosed. It is therefore a pleasure for us to invite you to attend the MISSCA 2013 Conference, timely juxtaposing a historical location with a memory of significant change of paradigms in Science.
